True Wild Distillery transforms a century-old industrial landmark into an immersive hospitality experience, blending craft distilling with dining and events. Originally built in 1911 as Calgary’s first substation, the building has evolved through time as an auto body shop, film set and an underground nightclub. Now, more than a hundred years later, True Wild Distillery carries the site’s legacy of energy and innovation into a vibrant, modern experience.
Industrial Elegance
The design for True Wild draws from the industrial past of the building while weaving in refined Art Deco influences that are still evidenced through exterior details and the interior’s original spiral staircase. The result is a space where industrial rawness through raw concrete, aged steel and historic elements are juxtapositioned with Art Deco refinement through rich wood tones, sophisticated detailing and warm lighting.
crafted experience
The space’s layout was designed to foster connection with the distilling process. Three oversized windows carved into thick concrete walls provide guests with a direct view of the distilling area. The distilling area itself immerses visitors in the art of spirit-making, with charred wood walls and an embossed logo creating a barrel-like experience. Second-level access to the distillery allows guests to view the distillation process from above, a perspective rarely offered in Canada.
Iconic evolution
True Wild honours the building’s more than 100 year history while introducing a modern hospitality experience. Original architectural elements are celebrated as design features including the cast-iron spiral staircase and a historic “follow me” crane. A second-level event space introduces further layers of sophistication with opulent chandeliers and a custom-designed stained-glass back bar featuring a “Prairie style” deco motif.
