Union Hotel (formerly the Strathcona Hotel) occupies a prime Toronto nexus; it’s steps from Union Station at the intersection of the city’s most storied districts. The ambitious transformation of this property reimagined it as an elevated hospitality retreat and a vibrant cultural landmark, with a complete reinvention of guest rooms and corridors, a striking lobby and new amenities. A bold exterior rearticulation cements the hotel’s renewed identity in Toronto’s evolving cityscape.
historical resonance
The design draws from the building’s layered history, referencing the original Savoy Hotel’s ties to Toronto’s garment industry and the city’s mosaic of 140 neighbourhoods. Carefully chosen materials balance heritage with contemporary relevance: flat-cut white oak introduces natural warmth; terrazzo floors reference the original building; mosaic tiles and bold patterned carpets energize guest areas. An eclectic palette, tactile textures and whimsical patterns further express the city’s layered identity.
CONSTRAINT AS CONTRAST
Design ingenuity turned constraints such as low ceilings and rigid concrete walls into opportunities. Strategic colour blocking, patterned wallcoverings, tinted mirrors and compact case goods enhance functionality and perceived volume without compromising integrity. The spatial experience unfolds through contrast: a dark exterior opens to a luminous interior; airy communal spaces transition to intimate, atmospheric washrooms, creating a layered sense of depth and character throughout.
A UNIFIED VISION
The vision for the hotel was to activate the ground floor as a social anchor, extending its hospitality beyond transient stays to foster community engagement through curated events, inviting lounge areas and culinary experiences. Close collaboration between designers, artists and stylists ensured the hotel became a multilayered expression of community, place and contemporary Toronto culture.
